Trimming the wick will keep the candle burning evenly without black soot. If the wick is too long, it can't draw the wax up to the top of the wick, so the wick itself starts burning, thus you will see some soot. You should properly trim the wick to 1/4 " after each burn.

Most candles on the market are made from Paraffin or a Soy/Paraffin combination. Paraffin wax is a petroleum by product, (refined gasoline) which is harmful to you and to the environment when burned. It is also know to contain toxins that according to the EPA are above the excess cancer risk with many multiple exposures. We only use a pure Soy wax in all of our products.
